Cleaning and Inspection

CLEANING
NOTE: If proper cleaning procedures of the cylinder bores and/or cylinder block are not followed, rusting and/or corrosion may occur.

After any cylinder bore service operation, such as honing or deglazing, clean the bore(s) with soap and water. Then, thoroughly rinse the bore(s) with clean water to remove the soap and wipe the bore(s) with a clean, lint-free cloth. Finally, wipe the bore(s) with a clean cloth dipped in engine oil.

If the engine is disassembled, thoroughly clean the cylinder block with solvent. Remove old gasket material from all machined surfaces. Remove all pipe plugs that seal oil passages. Blow out and clean all oil passages and bolt holes with compressed air. Make sure the threads in the cylinder head bolt holes are clean. Dirt in the threads may cause binding and result in a false torque reading when the bolts are installed. If necessary, use a tap to true-up threads and to remove all deposits in the threads. Thoroughly clean the grooves in the crankshaft bearings and bearing retainers.

INSPECTION
NOTE: The boring size should be based on the same size as the selected oversize piston.





Measure the cylinder bores in the X and Y directions at the three levels (A,B, and C) as shown.

For a standard-size piston, the maximum cylinder bore diameter should be 83.000-83.019 mm (3.2677-3.2684 inches).

If the cylinder bore exceeds the maximum specification, rebore the cylinder to oversize:
^ For an oversize piston 0.25 mm (0.010 inch), the cylinder bore diameter should be 83.250-83.270 mm (3.2776-3.2783 inches).
^ For an oversize piston 0.50 mm (0.020 inch), the cylinder bore diameter should be 83.500-83.519 mm (3.287-3.288 inches).
