Component Tests

1. With the engine off, press the brake pedal several times to deplete the vacuum reserve in the power brake booster.
2. Install Rotunda Brake Pedal Effort Gauge 014-R1051 or equivalent.
3. Press on the brake pedal with a force of about 222 N (50 lb.) and measure the brake pedal height.
- If the brake pedal travel is greater than 70mm (about 2-3/4 inches), bleed the brakes and recheck the brake pedal travel.
- If the brake pedal is still believed to be bottoming out, brake pedal reserve can be confirmed as follows:
a. Press the brake pedal with moderate to severe pressure and note the amount of brake pedal travel.
b. Open a bleeder screw at one front disc brake caliper and one rear wheel cylinder.

NOTE: The brake system is diagonally split. Therefore, open the bleeder screw at either the right front disc brake caliper and left rear wheel cylinder or at the left front disc brake caliper and right rear wheel cylinder.

Press the brake pedal and note the amount of brake pedal travel. The brake pedal should go to the floor.

c. Close the bleeder screws and refer to the Symptom Chart for causes of excessive brake pedal travel. Symptom Chart(s)
