Crankshaft Gear/Sprocket: Service and Repair
NOTE: Ford does not provide a TDC (Top Dead Center) mark or determination procedure for this engine in this vehicle.
ALLDATA users have reported success using aftermarket tools to determine TDC on this engine.
REMOVAL
NOTE: The engine front cover (6019) contains the oil pump gears and water pump (8501). If a new engine front cover is to be installed, remove the water pump and oil pump gears from the old engine front cover.
1. Remove engine front cover.
2. Remove camshaft sprocket retainer bolt and washer from end of the camshaft (6250).
3. Remove distributor drive gear (6255).
NOTE: If crankshaft sprocket (6306) is difficult to remove, loosen crankshaft sprocket by using a pair of large prybars positioned on both sides of the crankshaft sprocket.
4. Remove camshaft sprocket (6256), crankshaft sprocket and timing chain at the same time.
5. Pull back on ratcheting mechanism and install a pin through hole in bracket to relieve tension.
6. Remove timing chain vibration damper (6284) (three bolts) from front of cylinder block (6010).
INSTALLATION
1. With the timing chain vibration damper in the compressed position, install the timing chain vibration damper and retaining bolts to front of cylinder block. Tighten retaining bolts to 8-14 Nm (71-123 inch lbs.).
2. Rotate crankshaft (6303) as necessary to position No. 1 piston (6108) at top dead center (TDC) and keyway at the 12 o'clock position.
3. Lubricate timing chain with clean engine oil meeting Ford specification WSS-M2C153-F.

4. Install camshaft sprocket, crankshaft sprocket and timing chain at the same time. Make sure timing marks line up across from each other.
5. Install distributor drive gear.
6. Install retaining bolt and washer at end of camshaft. Tighten to 40-50 Nm (30-36 ft. lbs.).
7. Remove timing chain vibration damper retaining pin.
8. Install engine front cover.
