Initial Inspection and Diagnostic Overview

CAUTION: If any component in the parking brake system requires service or if the rear axle housing is removed, the cable tension must be released.

1. Verify the customer's concern by operating the parking brake system to duplicate the condition.
2. Operate the parking brake control and check for conditions that may cause binding, groaning or an incomplete release of the parking brake.
3. Inspect to determine if one of the following mechanical or electrical concerns apply:
Mechanical
^ Damaged parking brake control.
^ Binding/damaged parking brake cables.
Electrical
^ Parking brake warning indicator switch damaged.
4. If inspection reveals obvious concern(s) that can be readily identified, service as required.
5. If the parking brake rear cable and conduit is damaged it must be replaced. Service and Repair
6. Verify the parking brake control stroke is five to seven notches when pulled with a force of 98 N (22 lb).
