Ignition Cable: Service and Repair

REMOVAL

CAUTION: Do not pull on the spark plug wire directly because the ignition spark plug wire may separate from the connector inside the boot.

Spark Plug Wire Remover:





1. Using Spark Plug Wire Remover T74P-6666-A, Grasp and twist the ignition spark plug wire boot back and forth on the spark plug insulator while gently pulling to free the ignition spark plug wire boot.

Removing Ignition Wires At Coil Pack:





2. Squeeze the locking tabs of the coil boot retainer and remove the ignition spark plug wires from the ignition coil using a twisting and pulling motion.

INSTALLATION

CAUTION: Proper installation of ignition spark plug wires is critical to vehicle operation. If one ignition spark plug wire is not properly installed on the spark plug or on the ignition coil, both spark plugs connected to the ignition coil may not activate under load.

1. Whenever an ignition spark plug wire connection is removed for any reason, or a new ignition spark plug wire is installed, Silicone Brake Caliper Grease and Dielectric Compound D7AZ-19A331-A or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESE-M1C171-A must be applied to the interior surface of the ignition spark plug wire boot prior to installation. Use a small clean tool to coat the entire interior surface of the ignition spark plug wire boot.
2. Install each ignition spark plug wire on the proper ignition coil terminal. The terminal cylinder numbers are identified on the ignition coil. Ensure that the ignition spark plug wire coil boots are fully seated and that both ignition coil boot retainer locking tabs have engaged.
3. Remove the ignition wire separators from the old ignition spark plug wires and install the separators in the same relative position on the new wires. Install the ignition spark plug wires and ignition wire separators.
4. Connect the wires to the proper spark plugs.
