F: Inaccurate Fuel Gauge Indication
Pinpoint Test F - Inaccurate Fuel Gauge IndicationF1 - Check Fuel Gauge Response
- Disconnect battery ground cable.
- Lower fuel tank and gain access to fuel pump module connections.
- Connect a resistor value of between 170-100 ohms.
- Reconnect battery.
- Turn ignition switch to the RUN position. Display 1/2 tank or above fuel level.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF. Disconnect battery.
- Remove 170-100 ohms resistor.
- Connect a 43 ohm (± 1 percent) resistor in place of fuel pump module. Verify value with ohmmeter.
- Reconnect battery.
- Turn ignition switch to RUN.
NOTE: Allow at least 30 seconds for cluster to read level.
- FUEL REMAIN should read 3 to 4 GAL (13 to 15 LTR).
Is fuel gauge correct?
YES TURN ignition switch to OFF. GO to F3.
NO TURN ignition switch to OFF. Leave 43 ohm resistor connected. GO to F2.
F2 - Check Harness Resistance
- Disconnect battery ground cable.
- Remove electronic instrument cluster and secure connectors from shorting.
- Measure resistance between connector pin C1-6, circuit 29 (Y/W) and pin C1-B, circuit 676 (PK/O) with 43 ohm resistor in place.
Is resistance within range?
YES REPLACE electronic instrument cluster. AFFIX odometer sticker to door pillar. RESTORE vehicle. RETEST system.
NO SERVICE circuit 29 (Y/W). RESTORE vehicle. RETEST system.
F3 - Check Fuel Pump Module
- Disconnect battery ground cable.
- Check fuel pump module for binding, sticking, misalignment, etc.
- Check sender resistance not to exceed 181 ohms while moving arm slowly from fuel to empty.
- Check fuel pump resistance. Resistance should be 135 to 165 ohms of full stop and 14 to 18 ohms at empty stop.
Is fuel pump module resistance within limits specified?
YES GO to F4.
NO SERVICE or REPLACE fuel pump module. RESTORE vehicle. RETEST system.
F4 - Check Fuel Tank
- Check fuel tank for dents, bulges or other damage.
- Check for proper installation of fuel tube.
Is fuel tank OK?
YES System OK. Condition caused by other vehicle. RESTORE vehicle. RETEST system(s).
NO REPLACE fuel tank or fuel tube. RESTORE vehicle. RETEST system.
