X: Charge System Warning Never/Always ON

Pinpoint Test X - Charge System Warning Never/Always On

X1 - CHECK CHARGING SYSTEM VOLTAGE

- Start engine and check for warning. Watch for several minutes.
- Check battery voltage.

Is the voltage normal (above 14 volts) for engine at fast idle?

YES GO to X2.
NO SERVICE generator. RESTORE vehicle. RETEST system.

X2 - Check Harness To Generator

- Disconnect generator.
- Connect a jumper to ground from circuit 904 (LG/R) near the generator.

Does charge warning go away?

YES SERVICE the generator. RESTORE vehicle. RETEST system.
NO GO to X3.

X3 - Check Harness To Electronic Instrument Cluster

- Turn ignition switch to OFF.
- Turn ignition switch to RUN but do not start engine.
- Remove jumper.
- Measure voltage at generator from circuit 904 (LG/R) 10 ground

Is it greater than 4 volts?

YES GO to X5.
NO GO to X4.

X4 - Check Electronic Instrument Cluster Integral Voltage Regulator Resistor And Harness

- Turn ignition switch to OFF.
- Remove electronic instrument cluster.
- Check for loose or corroded screws on generator warning lamp shunt resistor on rear of electronic instrument cluster.
- Check that resistor is 400-600 ohms.
- Check continuity from resistor screws to circuit 904 (LG/R) at connector.
- Check for short to ground on circuit 904 (LG/R).

Has any check failed?

YES SERVICE as required to obtain over 4 volts. RESTORE vehicle. RETEST system.
NO SERVICE circuit 904 (LG/R) for short to ground. RESTORE vehicle. RETEST system.

X5 - Check Electronic Instrument Cluster Wiring For Open Circuit

- Turn ignition switch to OFF.
- Disconnect instrument cluster.
- Check for continuity in circuit 904 (LG/R).

Is there continuity?

YES REPLACE electronic instrument cluster. AFFIX odometer sticker to door pillar. RESTORE vehicle. RETEST system.
NO SERVICE circuit 904 (LG/R). RESTORE vehicie. RETEST system.
