Recall 97V067000: CNG - Backfire Problem

Vehicles modified to run on either gasoline or compressed natural gas (CNG). Some of these vehicles experience a backfire condition when the engine is being started on CNG. If this occurs, certain plastic parts of the air intake and air cleaner system can fracture. Fractured parts can potentially strike a person and result in personal injury if the engine is being started with the hood open. Ford is notifying owners to bring in their vehicles to have the CNG fuel system disabled until permanent corrective actions have been developed and implemented. Owner Notification: Owner notification began April 21, 1997. Notes: Owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact Ford at 1-800-392-3673. Also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's Auto Safety Hotline at 1-800-424-9393.
