WARNING:
THIS MODIFICATION IS AUTHORIZED ONLY FOR THE LISTED ENGINE. PERFORMING THIS MODIFICATION ON OTHER ENGINE CALIBRATIONS IS UNAUTHORIZED AND COULD CREATE LIABILITY UNDER APPLICABLE FEDERAL OR LOCAL LAWS.
ISSUE:
A vehicle converted to bi-fuel, Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), under the Qualified Vehicle Modifier (QVM) program that has not received the revised calibration may illuminate the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) and set multiple OBD II codes even if the gaseous fuel system is functioning properly.
ACTION:
Perform routine diagnostics and reprogram the PCM. CNG vehicles will require the Gaseous Fuel Injection (GFI) Vehicle Communication Link (VCL) to be replaced in addition to PCM reprogramming. Refer to the following Service Procedure for details and the Application Chart for appropriate calibration using the latest update 1996 CD-ROM.
NOTE:
REGIONAL APPROVAL IS REQUIRED WHEN IT IS NECESSARY TO REPLACE THE PCM.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
1. If the MIL lamp is illuminated, verify the PCM calibration in the Gaseous Fuel Prep (GFP) vehicle prior to performing the Diagnostic Procedure in the 1996 Powertrain Control/Emissions Diagnosis (PC/ED) Service Manual.
2. Reprogram (using SBDS or NGS) the PCM with the bi-fuel PCM calibration (refer to Application Chart). Refer to the appropriate Service Manual for PCM removal and installation procedures.
NOTE:
K1-122 VCL IS REQUIRED FOR GFI EQUIPPED CONTOUR VEHICLES, K1-110 VCL IS REQUIRED FOR GFI EQUIPPED ECONOLINE AND F-SERIES VEHICLES. RETURN USED VCL MODULE TO GFI.
NOTE:
VCL MODULE CAN BE REFLASHED IF THE APPROPRIATE GFI PERSONNEL AND EQUIPMENT ARE AVAILABLE.
3. Replace the GFI VCL module. Refer to the appropriate vehicle GFI Service Manual for VCL module removal and installation.
Obtain an Authorized Modification Decal (FPS 8262 - orderable through DOES II, 25/pkg) and list the date, dealer number, and summary of modifications performed. Select a prominent place adjacent to the Vehicle Emission Control Information Decal suitable for installing the Authorized Modifications Decal. Clean the area, install the decal, and cover it with a clear plastic decal shield.
