Cylinder Head Assembly: Service and Repair

1. Drain cooling system.
2. Disconnect battery ground cable.
3. Remove air cleaner outlet tube.
4. Remove intake manifold.
5. Loosen drive belt tensioners. Remove drive belts.
6. Remove upper outer timing belt cover.
7. Remove LH drive belt tensioner idler pulley and bracket (3.0L SHO). Remove LH drive belt idler pulleys (3.2L SHO).
8. Raise vehicle on a hoist.
9. Remove RH wheel and tire assembly and front fender splash shield.
10. Remove crankshaft damper pulley, then lower timing belt cover.
11. Remove lower outer timing belt cover.

Timing Mark Alignment:

12. Align timing marks as shown.
13. Release tension on timing belt by loosening tensioner attaching nut, then rotate tensioner with a hex head wrench. When tension is released, tighten timing belt tensioner idler pulley nut. This will hold the tensioner in place. Lower vehicle just until tires touch. Keep vehicle supported on hoist.
14. Disconnect crankshaft sensor wiring harness.
15. Remove center outer timing belt cover.

Fig. 7 Installing Timing Belt:

16. Remove timing belt. Note location of KOA(3.0L SHO) or KOB(3.2L SHO) on timing belt. The timing belt must be installed in the same direction..
17. Remove valve covers.
18. Remove camshaft sprockets.
19. Remove upper and center inner timing belt covers.
20. If LH cylinder head is being removed, remove the ignition control module, ignition coil bracket and oil level indicator tube. If RH cylinder head is being removed, remove water bypass hose.
21. Remove exhaust manifold on LH cylinder head. On RH cylinder head, exhaust manifold must be removed with the cylinder head.
22. Remove eight cylinder head to cylinder block retaining bolts and washers.
23. Remove cylinder head.

Installation

Cylinder Head Bolt Tightening Sequence:

1. NOTE: Lightly oil all bolt and stud bolt threads before installation except those specifying special sealant.
Remove and foreign materials or oil from top of cylinder block and lower surface of cylinder head.
2. NOTE: Replace cylinder head to block dowels if damaged.
Position head gasket and cylinder head on cylinder block, align with cylinder head to block dowels.
3. Install cylinder head bolts and washers and tighten in two steps, in the following sequence:

a. 49-69 N-m (36-51 lb-ft).
b. 83-93 N-m (62-69 lb-ft).

4. If LH cylinder head is being installed, install exhaust manifold, ignition control module, ignition coil bracket and oil level indicator tube. On RH cylinder head install water bypass hose and connect dual converter Y pipe.
5. Install upper and center inner timing belt covers.
6. Install camshaft sprockets in the timed positions.
7. Install valve covers as outlined.
8. Install timing belt as outlined.
9. Install center outlet timing belt cover.
10. Connect crankshaft position (CKP) sensor wiring harness.
11. Install lower outer timing belt cover.

Using cylinder head bolt tightening sequence shown, torque bolts in two steps as follows: first step to 37-50 ft lb, second step to 62-68 ft lb.
