Ignition System: Tools and Equipment
Required Equipment
EI Diagnostic Harness:
^ Electronic Ignition (EI) (High Data Rate) Ignition Diagnostic Harness (Rotunda 007-00059)
^ Spark Tester, Neon bulb type (Special Service Tool D89P-6666-A, Rotunda 105-00050,105-00051, 105-00052,105-00053, or Scan Tool 007-00500).
^ Volt-Ohmmeter (Rotunda 007-00001).
^ 12 volt incandescent test lamp.
^ Remote starter switch.
^ Two-EEC Breakout Boxes (Rotunda T83L-50-EEC).
^ Spark Tester, Gap type (Special Service Tool D8 1 P-6666-A). A spark plug with a broken side electrode is not sufficient to check for spark and may lead to incorrect results.
^ Inductive timing Light (Rotunda 059-00014) EI compatible.
^ Tachometer Adapter (Rotunda 007-00061) EI compatible
^ The required tachometer adapter (Rotunda 007-00061) is compatible with all Ford EI vehicles and is also compatible with the repetitive spark mode. A standard tachometer may not be compatible with this vehicle
NOTE:
Some Digital Volt-Ohmmeters (DVOM's) may display incorrect readings depending on their auto-ranging characteristics, and on how or when the test leads are connected.
It is suggested that the following tests be performed to determine if your DVOM is compatible with the Pinpoint Tests:
System Block Diagram:
Measure the coil to ground voltage at Idle: reading should be between 2 to 7 volts AC (4.5 volts AC is typical).
With the engine idling, measure between PIP and ground. This reading should be between 6 and 8 volts AC
,.
If the readings you get agree with these tests, your DVOM is OK to use with the Ignition Pinpoint Tests. If not, do not use it, it will lead to false parts replacement and the root cause will be difficult or impossible to find.
