Pinpoint Test L: A/C Clutch Does Not Engage
L1 Check Refrigerant System
- Perform the Refrigerant System Tests in Component Testing.
Is the refrigerant system performance OK?
Yes
GO to L2.
No
SERVICE the refrigerant system as necessary.
L2 Check Fuses
- Key OFF.
- Check the 10A REAR WIPER fuse located in the interior fuse junction panel and the 10A A/C fuse located in the main fuse junction panel.
Are the fuses OK?
Yes
GO to L6.
No
GO to L3.
L3 Check System
- Key OFF.
- Replace the blown fuse(s).
- Key ON.
Did the fuse(s) fail again?
Yes
If REAR WIPER fuse failed, GO to L4.
If A/C fuse failed, GO to L5.
No
GO to L6.
L4 Check For Short(s) To Ground
- Key OFF.
- Locate and disconnect the interior fuse junction panel connector C4.
- Locate and disconnect the [1][2]A/C relay connector.
- Locate and disconnect the A/C compressor clutch control relay connector.
- Measure the resistance of the "BL/GN" wire between [1][2]A/C relay connector and ground.
Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms?
Yes
RECONNECT the interior fuse junction panel connector C4.
REPLACE the 10A REAR WIPER fuse.
GO to L6.
No
SERVICE the "BL/GN" wire.
L5 Check For Shorts To Ground
- Key OFF.
- Remove the 10A A/C fuse.
- Locate and disconnect the [1][2]A/C relay connector.
- Measure the resistance of the "BL/Y" wire between the [1][2]A/C relay connector and ground.
Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms?
Yes
REPLACE the A/C fuse. GO to L6.
No
SERVICE the "BL/Y" wire.
L6 Check Blower Motor Switch
- Perform the Blower Motor Switch component test.
Is the blower motor switch OK?
Yes
GO to L7.
No
REPLACE the blower motor switch.
L7 Check A/C Compressor Clutch
- Disconnect the A/C compressor clutch connector.
- Start the engine.
- Jump 12 volts from the battery to the "BL/W" wire terminal on the A/C clutch, and ground to A/C compressor body (1.8L) or "BK" wire terminal (1.9L) on the A/C clutch.
Does the A/C compressor clutch instantly engage and pick up the compressor very rapidly without screeching or squealing?
Yes
GO to L8.
No
REPLACE the A/C clutch.
L8 Check [1][2]A/C Relay
- Perform the appropriate A/C Relay component test.
Is the [1][2]A/C relay OK?
Yes
GO to L9.
No
REPLACE the [1][2]A/C relay.
L9 Check Power To [1][2]A/C Relay
- Key OFF.
- Disconnect the [1][2]A/C relay connector.
- Key ON.
- Measure the voltage on the "BL/GN" and "BL/Y" wire terminals at the [1][2]A/C relay connector.
Are the voltages greater than 10 volts?
Yes
GO to L10.
No
SERVICE the wire(s) in question.
L10 Check A/C Cycling Switch
- Key OFF.
- Locate and disconnect the A/C cycling switch connector.
- With the evaporator warmed up (system shut down) check the continuity between the "GN/BL" and "GN/R" and wire terminals at the A/C cycling switch.
Does continuity exist?
Yes
GO to L11.
No
REPLACE the A/C cycling switch.
L11 Check A/C Pressure Cut-off Switch
- Key OFF.
- Locate and disconnect the A/C pressure cut-off switch connector.
- Check the continuity between the "W" and "GN/BL" wire terminals at the A/C pressure cut-off switch.
Does continuity exist?
Yes
GO to L12.
No
REPLACE the A/C pressure cut-off switch.
L12 Check A/C Pressure Cut-off Switch.
- Key OFF.
- Disconnect the A/C pressure cut-off switch connector.
- Check the continuity between the "BR" and "BK/GN" wire terminals at the A/C pressure cut-off switch.
Does continuity exist?
Yes
GO to L15.
No
REPLACE the A/C pressure cut-off switch.
L13 Check Wire to A/C Compressor Clutch (1.8L Only).
L14 Check Wires Between Blower Motor Switch And [1][2]A/C Relay (1.8L Only).
L15 Check A/C Compressor Clutch Control Relay.
- Remove the A/C clutch control relay.
- Apply 12 volts to the "BL/GN" and "GN/BK" wire terminals at the A/C clutch control relay.
- Measure the voltage on the "BL/W" wire terminal at the A/C clutch control relay under the following conditions:
BL/BK Wire Grounded 0 Volts.
BL/BK Wire Open 12 Volts.
Are the voltages correct?
Yes
GO to L16.
No
REPLACE the A/C clutch control relay.
L16 Check Power To A/C Compressor Clutch Control Relay.
- Key OFF.
- Disconnect the A/C compressor clutch control relay connector.
- Key ON.
- Measure the voltage on the "BL/GN" wire at the A/C compressor clutch control relay connector.
Is the voltage greater than 10 volts?
Yes
GO to L17.
No
SERVICE the "BL/GN" wire.
L17 Check Wire Between [1][2]A/C Relay And A/C Compressor Clutch Control Relay.
- Key OFF.
- Disconnect the [1][2]A/C relay connector.
- Disconnect the A/C compressor clutch control relay connector.
- Measure the resistance of the "GN/BK" wire between the [1][2]A/C relay connector and the
A/C compressor clutch control relay connector.
- Measure the resistance of the "GN/BK" wire between the [1][2]A/C relay connector and ground.
Is the resistance less than 5 ohms between the [1][2]A/C relay and the A/C clutch control relay, and greater than 10,000 ohms between the A/C relay and ground?
Yes
GO to L18.
No
SERVICE the "GN/BK" wire.
L18 Check Wires Between Blower Motor Switch And [1][2]A/C Relay.
- Key OFF.
- Disconnect the blower motor switch connector.
- Disconnect the A/C cycling switch connector.
- Disconnect the [1][2]A/C relay connector.
- Measure the resistance of the following wires between the components listed below:
GN/R wire between Heater Blower Motor Switch and A/C Cycling Switch
GN/BL wire between A/C Cycling Switch and A/C Pressure Cut-off Switch.
W wire between A/C Pressure Cut-off Switch and [1][2]A/C Relay.
Are all the resistances less than 5 ohms?
Yes
REFER to Powertrain Management / Testing and Inpsection / Diagnostic Routines (Diagnosis By Symptom) for diagnosis and testing of the powertrain control module (PCM) and the A/C pressure transducer.
No
SERVICE the wire(s) in question.
