PINPOINT TEST J: ENGINE COOLING FAN DOES NOT OPERATE WHEN A/C IS ACTIVATEDJ1 CHECK FUSE
- Remove cooling fan maxi fuse (50A Crown Victoria, Grand Marquis, 30A Town Car) from fuse junction panel.
- Check fuse continuity with ohmmeter.
- Is fuse OK?
- Yes
Go to J5.
- No
Go to J2.
J2 CHECK FOR SHORT IN VOLTAGE SUPPLY TO RELAY
- Remove cooling fan relay.
- Using an ohmmeter connected to a known good ground, connect second lead to cooling fan relay connector Pin 30, Circuit 37 (Y).
- Is resistance 10,000 ohms or more?
- Yes
Go to J3.
- No
Service Circuit 37 (Y) for short to ground. Restore vehicle. Retest system.
J3 CHECK FOR SHORT IN VOLTAGE SUPPLY TO COOLING FAN MOTOR
- Disconnect cooling fan motor connector.
- Using an ohmmeter connected to a known good ground, connect second lead to cooling fan motor connector Circuit 228 (DB) Crown Victoria, Grand Marquis or 229 (R/O) Town Car.
- Is resistance 10,000 ohms or more?
- Yes
Go to J4.
- No
Service Circuit 228 (DB) Crown Victoria, Grand Marquis or 229 (R/O) Town Car for short to ground. Restore vehicle. Retest system.
J4 CHECK COOLING FAN MOTOR OPERATION
- Reconnect cooling fan motor connector.
- Install good cooling fan maxi fuse (50A Crown Victoria, Grand Marquis, 30A Town Car).
- Connect a jumper wire between Pin 30, Circuit 37 (Y) and Pin 87, Circuit 228 (DB) Crown Victoria, Grand Marquis or Pin 229 (R/O) Town Car of the cooling fan relay connector.
- Does fuse open?
- Yes
Replace cooling fan motor. Restore vehicle. Retest system.
- No
Check circuit for intermittent short to ground. Restore vehicle. Retest system.
J5 CHECK FAN OPERATION WITH RELAY BYPASS
- Install good cooling fan maxi fuse (50A Crown Victoria, Grand Marquis, 30A Town Car).
- Connect a jumper wire between Pin 30, Circuit 37 (Y) and Pin 87, Circuit 228 (DB) Crown Victoria, Grand Marquis or Pin 229 (R/O) Town Car of the cooling fan relay connector.
- Does cooling fan motor run?
- Yes
G to J9.
- No
Go to J6.
J8 CHECK VOLTAGE SUPPLY TO COOLING FAN MOTOR
- Disconnect cooling fan motor connector.
- Using a voltmeter connected to a known good ground, check for battery voltage at cooling fan motor connector Circuit 228 (DB) Crown Victoria, Grand Marquis or 229 (R/O) Town Car.
- Is battery voltage present?
- Yes
Go to J8.
- No
Go to J7.
J7 CHECK VOLTAGE SUPPLY TO COOLING FAN RELAY
- Using a voltmeter connected to a known good ground, check for battery voltage at cooling fan relay connector Pin 30 Circuit 37 (Y).
- Is battery voltage present?
- Yes
Service Circuit 228 (DB) Crown Victoria, Grand Marquis or 229 (R/O) Town Car for open circuit. Restore vehicle. Retest system.
- No
Service Circuit 37 (Y) for open circuit. Restore vehicle. Retest system.
J8 CHECK GROUND CIRCUIT
- Using an ohmmeter connected to a known good ground, connect second lead to cooling fan motor connector Circuit 57(BK).
- Is resistance 5 ohms or less?
- Yes
Replace cooling fan motor. Restore vehicle. Retest system.
- No
Service Circuit 57 (BK) for open circuit. Restore vehicle. Retest system.
J9 CHECK FOR FAN-ON PCM SIGNAL
- Using an ohmmeter connected to a known good ground, connect second lead to cooling fan relay connector Pin 85, Circuit 228 (DB) Crown Victoria, Grand Marquis or 229 (R/O) Town Car.
- Start engine and select MAX A/C. Resistance should drop to 5 ohms or less within 30 seconds.
- Is resistance 5 ohms or less?
- Yes
Turn off engine. Go to J10.
- No
Turn off engine. Go to J11.
J10 CHECK VOLTAGE FROM PCM POWER RELAY
- Turn ignition switch to RUN.
- Using a voltmeter connected to a known good ground, check for battery voltage at cooling fan relay connector Pin 86, Circuit 361 (R).
- Is battery voltage present?
- Yes
Replace cooling fan relay. Restore vehicle. Retest system.
- No
Service Circuit 361(R) for open circuit. Restore vehicle. Retest system.
J11 CHECK FAN-ON PCM SIGNAL CIRCUIT
- Using an ohmmeter, check continuity of Circuit 229 (R/O) Crown Victoria, Grand Marquis or 228 (DB) Town Car between cooling fan relay connector Pin 85 and PCM connector Pin 28
- Is resistance 5 ohms or less?
- Yes

- No
Service Circuit 229 (R/O) Crown Victoria, Grand Marquis or 228 (DB) Town Car for open circuit. Restore vehicle. Retest system.
