Removal Procedure
WARNINGTHE BACKUP POWER SUPPLY ENERGY MUST BE DEPLETED BEFORE ANY AIRBAG COMPONENT SERVICE IS PERFORMED. TO DEPLETE THE BACKUP POWER SUPPLY ENERGY, DISCONNECT THE BATTERY GROUND CABLE AND WAIT ONE MINUTE.
1. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
2. Wait one minute while the backup power supply depletes.
3. Disconnect the two airbag diagnostic monitor connectors (under the LH instrument panel pad).
CAUTION
When removing the glove box door from its stops, take out one door stop side at a time. Trying to remove the door from both door stops at the same time could damage the door. Also, when removing the 12" section of heat duct, care must be taken not to damage the wire harness.
4. Open the glove compartment door, push in the sides of the glove compartment to release the stoppers and drop open the glove compartment.
5. Remove the glove compartment screws and remove the glove compartment.
6. Remove the screws from the glove compartment upper cover and remove the cover.
7. Remove 12" section of heat duct.
8. Disconnect the passenger side airbag module electrical connectors. (See Figures 1 and 2)
9. Remove the four bolts securing the passenger side airbag module to the instrument panel.
WARNING
WHEN CARRYING A LIVE AIRBAG, MAKE SURE THE BAG AND TRIM COVER ARE POINTED AWAY FROM YOUR BODY. IN THE UNLIKELY EVENT OF AN ACCIDENTAL DEPLOYMENT, THE AIRBAG WILL THEN DEPLOY WITH MINIMAL CHANCE OF INJURY.
IN ADDITION, WHEN PLACING A LIVE AIRBAG ON A BENCH OR OTHER SURFACE, ALWAYS FACE THE BAG AND TRIM COVER UP, AWAY FROM THE SURFACE. THIS WILL REDUCE THE MOTION OF THE MODULE IF IT IS ACCIDENTALLY DEPLOYED.
10. Remove the passenger side airbag module by pushing on passenger side airbag module from inside the instrument panel. DO NOT handle the passenger side airbag module by the edges of the deployment doors.
NOTE:
DO NOT pull the wiring when handling the passenger side airbag module.
11. Remove the (2) 10 mm nuts which secure the existing airbag bracket. See View A (inset on Attachment III-A).
12. Install reinforcement bracket from kit behind existing bracket. DO NOT remove existing bracket.
13. Tighten 10 mm nuts to a minimum torque of 7 N-m (5.2 ft-lb).
