Water Pump: Service and Repair
WARNING: TO AVOID THE POSSIBILITY OF PERSONAL INJURY OR DAMAGE TO THE VEHICLE, DO NOT OPERATE THE ENGINE WITH THE HOOD OPEN UNTIL THE FAN BLADE HAS FIRST BEEN EXAMINED FOR POSSIBLE CRACKS AND SEPARATION.NOTE: When installing nuts or bolts that must be tightened, oil the threads with lightweight engine oil. Do not oil threads that require oil-resistant or water-resistant sealer.
Water Pump:
Removal
1. Drain the engine cooling system.
2. Remove the air cleaner outlet tube. Refer to Powertrain Management/Fuel Delivery and Air Induction/Intake Air Duct. Service and Repair
3. Disconnect cooling fan motor from headlamp dash panel junction wire.
4. Remove the cooling fan motor, fan blade and fan shroud as an assembly. Refer to Engine, Cooling, and Exhaust/Cooling System/Cooling Fan Motor. Service and Repair
5. Remove the generator drive belt.
6. Remove all accessory brackets which attach to the water pump. Remove the water pump pulley.
7. Disconnect the lower radiator hose, heater water hose and water bypass hose at the water pump.
8. Remove the bolts and stud bolts that attach the water pump to the engine front cover.
9. Remove the water pump and water pump housing gasket. Discard the water pump housing gasket.
Installation
1. Remove all water pump housing gasket material from the mounting surfaces of the engine front cover and water pump.
2. Position a new water pump housing gasket, coated on both sides with Perfect Seal Sealing Compound B5A-1 9554-A or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESR-M18P2-A and ESE-M4GI 15-A on the engine front cover.
Install the water pump.
3. Install the retaining bolts and stud bolts. Tighten to 20-28 Nm (15-21 lb-ft).
4. Connect the lower radiator hose, heater water hose and water bypass hose at the water pump.
5. Install all the accessory brackets which attach to the water pump. Install the water pump pulley.
6. Install the drive belt.
7. Install the cooling fan motor, fan blade and fan shroud as an assembly. Refer to Engine, Cooling, and Exhaust/Cooling System/Cooling Fan Motor. Service and Repair
8. Connect cooling fan motor to headlamp dash panel junction wire.
9. Fill and bleed the engine cooling system.
10. Operate the engine until normal operating temperatures have been reached and check for leaks.
