Compressor
NOTES:
^ Vehicles that have an inoperative A/C compressor due to internal causes should have the refrigerant system cleaned to remove any debris or contaminants that may be present, to prevent damage to the replacement A/C compressor.
^ When an A/C compressor fails and internal damage occurs, A/C system contaminants can be produced in several ways. Refrigerant loss, poor lubrication, and internal component failure can cause a number of physical and chemical reactions inside the A/C compressor, resulting in the addition of contaminants to the A/C system.
^ Regular flushing procedures will not remove this type of contamination from the system. Therefore, the A/C system filtering procedure MUST be performed before a new A/C compressor can be installed.
REMOVAL
NOTE: When the A/C compressor is replaced, replace the suction accumulator/drier and the fixed A/C orifice tube.
1. Discharge the A/C system system into an approved recovery device.
2. Raise the vehicle.
3. Remove the undercover and splash shield.
4. Disconnect the accessory drive belt from the A/C compressor clutch pulley.
5. Remove the manifold bolts. Immediately plug all compressor and manifold openings to keep moisture out of the system.
6. Disconnect the A/C compressor clutch field coil electrical connector.
7. Remove the four air conditioner bolts.
8. Remove the A/C compressor.
INSTALLATION
1. Add the necessary amount of R-134a PAG refrigerant oil (Motorcraft Part #YN-12) to the new A/C compressor.
2. Position the A/C compressor and install the four air conditioner bolts. Tighten the air conditioner bolts to 20-30 N.m (15-22 lb-ft).
3. Connect the clutch field coil electrical connector.
4. Remove all plugs, then install new 0-rings lubricated with clean refrigerant oil on the manifolds.
5. Position the manifolds and install the manifold bolts. Tighten the manifold bolts to 18-23 N.m (13-17 lb-ft).
6. Attach the accessory drive belt to the A/C compressor clutch pulley.
7. Install the splash shield and undercover.
8. Lower the vehicle.
9. Check the accessory drive belt for proper tension.
NOTE: The A/C system should be filtered whenever the A/C compressor is replaced.
10. Leak test, evacuate, and charge the A/C system.
