Front Door Glass - Binds or Comes Out of Track

Article No.

GLASS - FRONT DOOR GLASS COMES OUT OF TRACK - HIGH ROLL UP EFFORT - 3-DOOR - VEHICLES BUILT THROUGH 6/1/94

FORD:
1994 ASPIRE

ISSUE:
Some vehicles may require increased effort when rolling up the window glass. The glass may bind or come out of the track making it hard/impossible to roll. It may break. This is due to the front glass guide position varying during assembly of the door causing the glass to fit loose or tight, bind and/or fall out of the track.

ACTION:
Inspect the position of the track and adjust if needed. Inspect the regulator and glass and replace as needed. Refer to the following procedures for service details.

INSPECTION

1. Verify concern by physical inspection of the door. Is the glass off the track and/or are window roll up efforts high?

a. YES: Remove door panel, speaker, and plastic water shield per the 1994 Aspire Service Manual, Section 01-11-7. Go to Step 2.

b. NO: Review/verify concern with customer.

2. With the window in the full down position, inspect the guide tabs on the regulator for breakage or signs of cracking (Figure 1).

3. Observe position of glass.

a. Is it off track?
b. Are the roll up efforts high and at what position are they?

^ High position

^ Top middle position

^ Bottom position

^ Full travel

4. If glass is off track or if customer states it has fallen off, inspect glass and verify it is free of scratches or damage.

TRACK ADJUSTMENT REPAIR

1. Replace the regulator if broken or the tabs show signs of cracking per the 1994 Aspire Service Manual, Section 01-11-8.

2. Replace the window glass if scratched or damaged in any way.

NOTE:
WHEN INSTALLING THE GLASS TO REGULATOR ATTACHING BOLTS, HAND TIGHTEN ONLY.

3. Roll the window to the full up position.

4. Measure position of front track at the lower mounting bracket. The bracket can be located through the speaker opening (Figure 2). To measure:

^ Rest a steel rule on the top of the bracket, against the track and hold it horizontal.

^ Push the rule forward until it contacts the door at the front edge.

^ The dimension is from the inside surface of the front door to the front edge of the track (Figure 2). The specification is 108-110 mm.

NOTE:
WHEN A GLASS FALLS OUT AT THE LOWER POSITION, THE TRACK MAY BE POSITIONED TOO FAR FORWARD, 108 mm OR LESS. IF THE WINDOW HAS HIGH ROLL UP EFFORTS, THE TRACK MAY BE POSITIONED TOO FAR REARWARD, 110 mm OR MORE, CAUSING BINDING OF THE GLASS.

5. To adjust the position of the track rearward, use a pry bar, resting it on the lower support bracket with the tip positioned behind the track and the pry bar protruding through the speaker opening (Figure 3).

6. Adjust the track to meet the 108-110 mm dimension.

NOTE:
ADJUSTING THE TRACK SLIGHTLY BEYOND THE DESIRED POSITION MAY BE REQUIRED TO ACCOMMODATE SPRING BACK OF THE TRACK.

7. To adjust the position of the track forward, reach through the opening, rear of the speaker opening with your hand and grasp the track at the bracket area. Push forward on the track to meet the 108-110 mm dimension (Figure 4).

NOTE:
ADJUSTING THE TRACK SLIGHTLY BEYOND THE DESIRED POSITION MAY BE REQUIRED TO ACCOMMODATE SPRING BACK OF THE TRACK.

8. Measure the position of the track and readjust as needed.

9. Roll the window to the full down position, to the full up position and then to the full down position.

10. Tighten the window glass-to-regulator attaching bolts. Tighten the FRONT bolt "A", then the REAR bolt "B", to 8-11 N-m (6-8 lb.ft.) (Figure 6).

NOTE:
FOLLOW THE TIGHTENING SEQUENCE: FRONT BOLT "A", THEN REAR BOLT "B".

NOTE:
CARE MUST BE USED TO AVOID OVER-TORQUING; STRIPPING OF THE PLASTIC MOUNTING TABS MAY OCCUR.

11. Roll the window to the full up position and then to the full down position; pay attention to the efforts.

12. If the window rolls up and down and the efforts are higher than normal or unacceptable, adjust the regulator using the following procedure.

NOTE:
VERIFY THE WINDOW RUN IS POSITIONED CORRECTLY AND EFFORTS ARE HIGHER THAN NORMAL.

REGULATOR ADJUSTMENT REPAIR

1. Remove the glass and regulator from the door.

2. Elongate the regulator attaching holes as follows:

^ HOLE 1: Elongate the top REAR hole (H1) 1 mm downward by grinding with a file (Figure 5).

^ HOLE 2: Elongate the lower hole (H2) 1.5 mm forward by grinding with a file (Figure 5).

^ HOLE 3: Do not change the top FRONT hole (H3) (Figure 5).

3. Apply primer to elongated holes.

4. Install the regulator and tighten the attaching nuts and bolt; hand tighten only.

5. Install the window glass.

6. Tighten the window glass-to-regulator attaching bolts. Tighten the FRONT bolt "A", then the REAR bolt "B", to 8-11 N-m (6-8 lb.ft.) (Figure 6).

NOTE:
FOLLOW THE TIGHTENING SEQUENCE:
FRONT BOLT "A", THEN REAR BOLT "B".

NOTE:
CARE MUST BE USED TO AVOID OVER-TORQUING; STRIPPING OF THE PLASTIC MOUNTING TABS MAY OCCUR.

7. Roll the window to the full up position and then push the glass rearward, by hand, to position the glass fully into the glass run.

8. Tighten the REAR regulator attaching nut "A", then the LOWER bolt "B" and then the FRONT nut "C" respectively. Tighten the regulator attaching nuts to 9-13 N-m (7-9 lb.ft.) and the bolt to 8-11 N-m (6-8 lb.ft.) (Figure 7).

NOTE:
FOLLOW THE TIGHTENING SEQUENCE: REAR NUT "A", LOWER BOLT "B", THEN FRONT NUT "C".

9. Roll the window to the full down, then full up position and then to the full down position; pay attention to the efforts.

10. It the window rolls up and down and the efforts are acceptable but higher than normal, lubricate the window runs with Ford Silicone Lubricant (D7AZ-19553-AA, aerosol, or COAZ-19553-AA, tube).

NOTE:
ONE CAN OF FORD SILICONE LUBRICANT AEROSOL IS ABLE TO ACCOMMODATE APPROXIMATELY 30 APPLICATIONS.

11. After any adjustment is made, cycle the window and observe the change in roll up efforts.
