TRANSAXLE - ATX - NO UPSHIFT IN COLD AMBIENT
TEMPERATURES - VEHICLES BUILT THROUGH 10/1/95
FORD:
1994-95 ASPIRE
ISSUE:
A delayed or no 1-2 upshift may occur on some vehicles during cold ambient temperatures. This may be due to moisture buildup in the vacuum modulator causing corrosion and ice inside the modulator and vacuum line.
ACTION:
Replace the modulator and install an additional length vacuum line and vacuum tee. This will reduce the possibility of moisture buildup by forming an upward loop/trap in the vacuum line. Refer to the following Service Procedure for details.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
1. Replace the vacuum modulator with a new vacuum modulator (F4BZ-7A377-A). Do not attempt to clean the old modulator. Refer to the appropriate year Aspire Service Manual for details.
2. Remove the vacuum line hose from the upper intake manifold to the fuel pressure regulator. Refer to Figure 1.
3. Cut the vacuum hose at 48 mm (1.9") length from the end of the fuel pressure regulator side. This will create a shorter hose and a longer hose. Cut the longer hose an additional 13 mm (0.5") in length. Refer to Figure 2.
4. Connect the shorter hose and the longer hose to the vacuum tee (3/16" run X 1/4" tee). Refer to Figure 3.
5. Disconnect the vacuum hose from the intake manifold that connects to the vacuum pipe that is along side of the transaxle going to the vacuum modulator.
NOTE:
THE ORIGINAL HOSE MUST BE LEFT IN PLACE. AN ORIFICE IS IN PLACE TO DAMPEN FLOW FLUCTUATION TO THE VACUUM DIAPHRAGM.
6. Plug the L-shaped vacuum port onto the upper intake manifold using a vacuum plug (382443-S).
7. Install the straight vacuum connector (383005-S) and the additional 200 mm (7.9") of vacuum line (DOPZ-12226-C) to the free end of the original vacuum hose. Refer to Figure 3.
8. Reinstall the fuel pressure regulator vacuum hose between the regulator and the upper intake manifold. Position the vacuum tee pointing upward to avoid kinks in the hose. Refer to Figure 4.
NOTE:
MAKE SURE THE VACUUM TEE DOES NOT RUB ON THE INTAKE MANIFOLD.
9. Connect the free end of the new vacuum hose to the vacuum tee. Refer to Figure 3.
10. Secure the vacuum hose to the brake booster vacuum line using a tie strap (95874-S). Refer to Figures 4 and 5.
