Distributor: Service and Repair
REMOVALNOTE: Cap, rotor, inner and outer covers, and O-ring can be replaced individually. Distributor should be replace as a unit. Do not attempt to disassemble and service distributor assembly.
1. Disconnect negative battery cable.
NOTE: When the battery has been disconnected and reconnected, some abnormal drive symptoms may occur while the powertrain control module relearns its adaptive strategy. The vehicle may need to be driven 10 miles or more to relearn the adaptive strategy.
Distributor Cap:
2. Remove distributor cap screws.
3. Pull distributor cap off and position it aside.
Electrical Connectors:
4. Disconnect distributor electrical connectors.
5. Scribe a reference mark across distributor base flange and cylinder head. Note rotor position for installation reference.
Distributor Assembly:
6. Remove bolts and distributor unit.
Distributor O-Ring:
7. Remove O-ring from distributor unit.
INSTALLATION
Distributor Installation:
1. Install new distributor O-ring.
NOTE: When installing distributor, make sure offset drive tangs engage with camshaft slots.
2. Position distributor and install mounting bolts. Rotor should be in same position as when removed.
3. Align reference marks made during removal.
4. Install distributor electrical connectors.
5. Install distributor cap and screws.
6. Install the negative battery cable.
7. Check and adjust ignition timing.
8. Tighten mounting bolts to 19-25 Nm (14-19 ft lb).
