Child Restraint: Service and Repair

Child Safety Seat Locking Clip Installation

WARNING

- WHEN POSSIBLE, PUT CHILDREN IN THE REAR SEAT OF YOUR VEHICLE. ACCIDENT STATISTICS SUGGEST THAT CHILDREN ARE SAFER WHEN PROPERLY RESTRAINED IN THE REAR SEATING POSITIONS THAN IN THE FRONT SEATING POSITIONS.

- WHEN USING ANY INFANT OR CHILD RESTRAINT SEAT IT IS IMPORTANT TO FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS PROVIDED BY THE MANUFACTURER CONCERNING ITS INSTALLATION AND USE. FAILURE TO FOLLOW EACH OF THE INSTRUCTIONS GREATLY INCREASES THE RISK OF A CHILD BEING INJURED IN A COLLISION OR SUDDEN STOP.

A locking clip must be installed on the belt tongue to secure a child seat. The locking clip prevents the belt tongue from sliding, stabilizing the child safety seat. Every seat belt that requires a locking clip is identified by a label on the belt.

1. Thread the belt webbing through the child seat according to the child seat manufacturer's instructions.
2. Buckle the seat belt. Remove the slack from the lap portion of the belt by pulling on the shoulder portion.

3. While keeping the lap belt snug, hold lap and shoulder portions of belt together next to the belt tongue and unbuckle the seat belt.

4. Slide either of the locking clip slots over both the lap and shoulder portions of the belt as close as possible to the belt tongue.

5. Pinch both layers of the seat belt and insert into the other slot of the locking clip as shown.

6. Buckle the belt and forcibly tilt the child seat from side to side and forward to see if it is held securely in place. If excessive movement occurs, repeat Steps 3 through 5, or properly install the child seat in a different seating position.
