Ignition Timing: Adjustments

Self Test Input Connector:

1. Apply parking brake. Place transmission in "P" (A/T) or neutral (M/T). Ensure that A/C and heater fan is "OFF."
2. Connect inductive timing light to #1 plug wire.
3. Connect Rotunda Inductive Dwell-Tach-Volts-Ohms Tester (059-00005), or equivalent, to single pin white test connector.
4. Start engine and warm to operating temperature.
5. Ground single pin black, Self-Test Input (STI) test connector (Y/BL wire) located near brake master cylinder.
6. Check idle speed and adjust if needed.

Idle Speed M/T: 680 - 720 rpm in neutral
A/T: 830 - 870 rpm in "P"

Timing Marks:

7. Check base timing. White timing mark on crankshaft pulley should align with white pointer on timing belt cover.

Base Timing: 10° ± 1° BTDC

Distributor Mounting Bolts:

8. If white marks are not aligned, loosen mounting bolts and turn distributor until marks align.
9. Tighten the distributor mounting bolts to specification:

Torque to: 19 - 25 Nm (14 - 18 ft lb)

10. After tightening bolts, make sure timing did not move.
11. Remove STI connector jumper wire.
12. Raise engine speed and ensure that timing changes.
13. Disconnect timing light and tester.
