FORD:
1992 TAURUS
ISSUE:
The clutch pressure plate to flywheel attaching bolts may be loose because of improper torque. This may be associated with the following symptoms.
^ There is an intermittent "clicking" noise or subtle vibration from the clutch pedal when it is lightly depressed near the top of the pedal stroke.
^ The clutch does not fully disengage when the clutch pedal is fully depressed.
^ There are high shift efforts, "clashing" noise when shifting into reverse while using the proper engagement procedure as outlined in TSB 89-17-15.
^ There is a "notchy" feel while shifting into any gear.
ACTION:
Check for loose clutch pressure plate attaching bolts and, if necessary, install a new clutch pressure plate and disc kit along with a new clutch release bearing assembly. Refer to the following procedure for service details.
1. Remove the MTX IV Transaxle from the vehicle. Refer to the 1992 Taurus Service Manual, Page 07-03-16, for the removal procedure.
2. Check for loose clutch pressure plate attaching bolts. They should be tightened to 22-24 lb.ft. (30-33 N-m).
3. If loose bolts are found, proceed as follows:
a. Install a clutch pressure plate and disc (FIDZ-7A537-A). Refer to Instruction Sheet # 6132 included in the kit for installation details.
b. Install six (6) N806606-S100 attaching bolts.
CAUTION:
BE SURE TO USE THESE BOLTS WHICH HAVE "LOCTITE" APPLIED.
c. Install a new clutch release bearing assembly (E8FZ-7548-A). Refer to the 1992 Taurus Service Manual, Section 08-01, for the installation procedure.
d. Tighten attaching bolts to 22-24 lb.ft. (30-33 N-m).
4. Install the MTX IV Transaxle in the vehicle. Refer to the 1992 Taurus Service Manual, Page 07-03-19, for the installation procedure.
