Digital
The Digital Cluster consists of Indicator/Warning Lamps, Gauges and a System Scanner that monitors various vehicle conditions and displays a message when a warning is necessary.
GAUGES
With the Ignition Switch in the ACCY or RUN position, current is applied to the Indicator/Warning Lamps and solid state gauges through the Meter, Room and Cooling Fan fuses of the Interior Fuse Panel. The Instrument Cluster monitors fuel level, Temperature, vehicle speed, engine speed, Oil Pressure, Brakes, Anti-Lock Brakes, Seat Belt, Engine Check, Battery, Hi-Beam Headlamps, Turn Signals, and Manual Shift Mode (ATX) conditions.
Fuel Gauge
The Fuel gauge is connected to the Fuel Pump Sending Unit. The sender is a variable resistor which is dependent upon the fuel level. When the fuel level is low, resistance is high; when the fuel level is high, resistance is low.
Temperature Gauge
The Temperature gauge is connected to the Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) Sensor. The sensor is temperature dependent variable resistor. When the water temperature is low, resistance is high; when the water temperature is high, resistance is low.
Speedometer
The Speedometer operates from a pulse signal generated by the Speed Sensor.
Tachometer
The Tachometer receives a signal from the Ignition Coil when the engine is running. The Tachometer displays the signal as revolutions per minute (RPM).
Oil Pressure Gauge
The Oil Pressure gauge is connected to the Oil Pressure Sender. The sender is a pressure sensitive variable resistor. When the oil pressure is low, resistance is high; when oil pressure is high, resistance is low.
WARNING/INDICATOR LAMPS
Brake Warning Indicator
The Brake Warning Indicator lights when the Brake Fluid Sensor indicates low brake fluid level through low resistance of the sensor.
Anti-lock Brake System (ABS)
The Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) Warning Indicator lights when a malfunction in the ABS is signaled by the ABS Control Module.
Seat Belt
The Seat Belt Warning Indicator will light when the Passive Restraint Module and/or the Electronic Engine Control (EEC) signals a warning.
Engine Check
The Engine Check warning indicator will light if the ECA senses a fault in the Electronic Engine Control (EEC) system. The indicator is turned on to alert the driver when the Ignition Switch is first turned to the ON position. After 60 seconds, the indicator turns off.
Battery
The Battery warning indicator will light when the battery voltage falls outside the normal operating range.
Hi-Beam Indicator
The Hi-Beam indicator lights when the Dimmer Switch is moved to the High Beam position. The indicator receives current through the Dimmer Relay when the Hi-Beam Headlamps are ON.
Turn Indicator
The Turn Indicators receives a current when the Multi-function Switch is turned to indicate the desired vehicle direction change.
Manual Shift Indicator
The Manual Shift Indicator is activated when the automatic transaxle is placed in the Manual Shift Mode.
SYSTEM SCANNER
The System Scanner monitors the condition of various vehicle systems. The scanner generates the required display based on inputs to the Instrument. If the scanner detects one of the following conditions, the Central Processing Unit (CPU) will sound a chime and display a message. If more than one vehicle condition exits, the display will cycle the messages until the conditions are corrected. The chime will sound only when the condition is first noted.
Low Oil Level
The Oil Level Sensor will close with low oil level and will provide a ground through the Oil Level Module to the System Scanner.
Low Fuel
When the Fuel Tank/Sending Unit signals less than three gallons of fuel in the fuel tank and three or less fuel bars are displayed on the fuel gauge, this message will be displayed.
Low Coolant
This message is displayed when the Coolant Level Switch is closed with low coolant levels. The information is first processed by the CPU.
Service Interval Check
This is a reminder that if the vehicle has not been serviced in 7500 miles of use, then it should be. This warning can be reset by a key located on the Keyboard.
Low Washer Fluid
The Washer Level Sensor closes with low washer fluid level and supplies a ground to the System Scanner.
Door Ajar
The Door Jamb Switch signals the System Scanner through the CPU if one of the doors is not securely closed.
Decklid Ajar
The System Scanner receives a ground through the Cargo Lamp Switch when the decklid is not securely closed.
Tail Lamp Out
The Stop/Tail Lamp Checker informs the System Scanner of a Stop Lamp outage.
Headlamp Out
The Headlamp Checker informs the System Scanner of a Headlamp outage.
If none of the above conditions exist, System Scanner will display SYSTEM NORMAL.
SYSTEM SCANNER KEYBOARD
The Keyboard buttons perform the following functions:
Speed Alarm
Press to display the speed alarm. Press again to either turn ON or OFF the speed alarm. The OFF condition is indicated by "---" in place of the speed indicated on the System Scanner.
The Speed Alarm feature allows the driver to set a predetermined maximum vehicle speed audible warning. If the Speed Alarm is ON and the vehicle exceeds the speed alarm set speed, three tones will sound ant the speed alarm display will show the set speed alarm on the System Scanner. The System Scanner speed alarm will remain until either the vehicle speed is reduced below the set speed alarm value or the speed alarm button on the Keyboard is pressed to turn OFF the alarm.
Speed Increase
With the engine running, pressing this button displays the speed alarm. Each additional press will activate the speed alarm and then increase the set speed. The maximum set speed is 85 mph (250 km/h).
Speed Decrease
With the engine running, pressing this button displays the speed alarm. Each additional press will activate the speed alarm and then decrease the set speed. The minimum set speed is 25 mph (40 km/h).
M/KM
Pressing the button changes the speed units displayed from miles to kilometers or kilometers to miles. This button also turns off the speed alarm and changes the set speed to 55 mph (90 km/h).
Dim
When the vehicle's Parking Lamps or Headlamps are illuminated, all lamps on the Instrument Cluster are automatically dimmed as controlled by the Panel Lamp Dimmer Switch. Pressing this button will cause the Cluster Lamps to return to normal brightness. Press again to restore dimming.
T/ODO
Press this button to change the display on the Instrument Cluster from odometer to trip odometer or vice versa.
T/SET
The trip odometer can be reset by first displaying the trip odometer and then pressing this button and holding it until a second tone is heard.
Serv
This button cancels the Service Check display of the System Scanner. Press this button and hold until three tones have sounded to cancel the message and reset the service interval.
