Crankshaft Position Sensor: Description and Operation

PURPOSE
The Crankshaft Position Sensor (CPS) provides crankshaft rotation speed input to the ECA. The ECA uses this signal to modify air/fuel ratio, idle speed, injector timing, ignition timing, fuel pressure, purge flow, EGR flow, and boost pressure.

LOCATION
In distributor housing.

OPERATION
A 24 tooth sensor rotor mounted on the distributor shaft passes a fixed magnetic pickup, generating a signal indicating crankshaft rotation speed.
