Throttle Position Switch: Adjustments

CAUTION: DO NOT adjust idle switch at throttle lever. This is factory adjusted and should not be tampered with. Doing so may damage the throttle body to the point of requiring replacement.

1. Remove air duct assembly from throttle body if necessary.
2. Disconnect TPS electrical connector at bottom of throttle body assembly.

Throttle Position Sensor Connector:

3. Remove plastic connector shield from male side of TPS connector.

Throttle Position Sensor Connector:

4. Reconnect unshielded males side TPS connector to female connector. Be sure leads are in their proper locations.

NOTE: Use care not to ground exposed leads.

5. Turn ignition switch ON.
6. Make sure both throttle valves are fully closed.

Throttle Position Sensor Connector:

7. Connect a volt-ohmmeter (Rotunda #007-00001, or equivalent) to red and black wires. Measure red wire voltage. Reading should be 4.5 - 5.5 volts.

Throttle Position Sensor Connector:

8. Change voltmeter connection to white wire.
9. Loosen, but do not completely remove, TPS mounting screws.
10. Turn TPS to adjust white wire voltage within range specified in chart below for red wire voltage.

Throttle Position Sensor Specification: Throttle Valve Fully Closed Position:

11. Tighten TPS mounting screws and verify white wire voltage is still within range.

NOTE: If white wire voltage cannot be adjusted to within the limit, sensor must be replaced.

Throttle Position Sensor Adjustment:

12. Hold throttle in fully open position and measure red wire voltage. Record voltage measured.
13. With throttle still wide open, measure voltage at white wire.
14. Compare white wire voltage from step 13 with red wire voltage from step 12. If voltages do not compare to chart below, sensor must be replaced and this procedure repeated on new sensor.

Throttle Position Sensor Specification: Throttle Valve Fully Open Position:

15. Turn ignition switch OFF. Disconnect voltmeter and replace plastic shield on male side of TPS connector.
16. Connect TPS connector.
17. Disconnect negative battery terminal and depress brake pedal for at least ten seconds to eliminate ECA malfunction memory, then reconnect battery.
18. If air duct was previously removed, install it.
