Malfunction Indicator Lamp: Description and Operation

Check Engine (Malfunction Indicator) Light:

PURPOSE
The Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) provides a visual warning to the driver in event of an Electronic Engine Control (EEC) failure. The light can also be used to retrieve fault codes when self test mode is entered.

LOCATION
Marked "Check Engine" on the instrument panel cluster.

OPERATION
The light will illuminate when there is a fault and the engine is operating in Limited Operating Strategy (LOS) mode. It will stay on continuously while the engine is running and there is one or more faults in the system.
