Crankshaft Position Sensor: Service and Repair
Crankshaft Position Sensor Connector:
REMOVAL
1. Disconnect crankshaft timing sensor assembly electrical connector.
2. Remove wires from sensor connector by removing red retaining clip.
3. Remove accessory drive belts and crankshaft pulley assembly.
Timing Belt Cover Area Exploded View:
4. Remove timing belt outer cover retaining bolt. Release eight cover interlocking tabs. Remove cover.
5. Rotate the crankshaft until keyway is at ten o'clock position. This will place the vane window of both inner and outer cups over crankshaft timing sensor assembly.
6. Remove crankshaft timing sensor assembly retaining bolts and plastic wire harness retainer that holds sensor harness to its mounting bracket.
7. Remove crankshaft timing sensor assembly, sliding electrical wires out from behind the inner timing belt cover.
INSTALLATION
1. Remove large electrical connector from new crankshaft timing sensor assembly.
Crankshaft Position Sensor:
2. Position crankshaft timing sensor assembly by sliding electrical wires behind inner timing belt cover, then loosely install the retaining bolts. DO NOT tighten the bolts at this time.
3. Install large electrical connector onto the crankshaft timing sensor harness.
IMPORTANT:
- Make sure the wires are located in their original positions.
- Sensor will not function properly if wires are installed improperly.
4. Reconnect crankshaft timing sensor electrical connectors.
Aligning Crankshaft Position Sensor:
5. Rotate crankshaft so outer vane on crankshaft pulley hub engages both sides of crankshaft hall effect sensor positioner (Ford T89P-6316-A or equivalent).
Tighten sensor retaining bolts to 22-31 in lbs (2.5-3.5 Nm).
6. Rotate crankshaft until crankshaft pulley vane clears the positioning tool. Remove the tool.
7. Install new plastic wire harness retainer to secure crankshaft timing sensor harness to its mounting bracket, trimming off any excess retainer.
8. Install timing belt outer cover and crankshaft pulley assembly.
Tighten pulley attaching bolts to 20-28 ft lbs (28-38 Nm).
9. Install accessory drive belts.
