RADIO "HUM" IN AM STEREO AND TAPE MODE - VEHICLES WITH SPEED CONTROL AND PREMIUM OR JBL SOUND SYSTEMS BUILT BETWEEN 2/20/92 AND 4/8/92

FORD:
1992 CROWN VICTORIA

LINCOLN-MERCURY:
1992 GRAND MARQUIS

ISSUE:
A "hum" may be heard when the radio is played in the AM stereo or tape modes. The noise is caused by the location of the speed control ground.

ACTION:
Reroute the speed control ground. Refer to the following procedure for service details.

1. Locate the 10 way speed control connector in the left rear area of the engine compartment, Figure 1.

2. Remove the connector from the servo/amplifier assembly.

3. Remove the red wedge from the front of the connector.

4. Locate the grey wire with a red stripe (Circuit 359) and remove it from the connector, Figure 2.

5. After removing the wire, tape over the terminal and then tape the terminal to the main body of the wire assembly.

6. Install the terminal of a new wire assembly (F2AZ-13N850-A) in the same cavity of the 10 way connector from which Circuit 359 was removed in Step 4.

7. Reinstall the red wedge in the connector. Pull test the wiring to ensure that all wires are locked in the connector.

8. Remove the electronic engine control (EEC) case ground screw and discard it, Figure 3.

9. Reattach the EEC case ground using a new stud included with the wire assembly, Figure 3. Tighten the stud to 9-10 N-m (6.6-7.4 lb.ft.).

10. Place the eyelet of the new wire assembly (F2AZ-13N850-A) on the stud.

a. Secure the eyelet using a new nut included with the wire assembly.

b. Tighten the nut to 8.4-11.4 N-m (6.2-8.4 lb.ft.).

11. Reconnect the speed control 10 way connector.

12. Check the EEC, speed control and radio systems for proper operation.
