LAMP-AIR BAG WARNING LIGHT-FLASHES ERRONEOUSLY WHEN GLOVE BOX IS CLOSED
FORD: 1992 CROWN VICTORIA
LINCOLN-MERCURY: 1992 GRAND MARQUIS
ISSUE: The air bag warning light may stay on in error when the glove box is closed. This occurs because the shorting bars in the connector to the air bag diagnostic module are not fully disengaging when the connection is made.
ACTION: Rework the air bag diagnostic module connector spacer so the shorting bars are free to fully disengage. If necessary, replace the spacer.
1. Open the the glove compartment door. Push in compartment sides to allow glove compartment to rotate past the rubber stops.
2. Locate the blue air bag diagnostic module and disconnect the gray connector from the module.
Figure 1:
3. Partially remove the red spacer (F2AZ-14A468-B) from the gray connector to expose the front part of the two (2) shorting bars, Figure 1.
4. Insert a pick into the front locking tang of each shorting bar and push it down until the tang is at a 90~ angle with the shorting bar. This will allow the shorting bar to move forward when the connection is made.
5. Reinstall the spacer fully into the connector.
6. Leaving the gray connector disconnected, turn the ignition switch to the RUN position. The air bag warning light should turn on and stay on. Confirm this condition for 20 seconds.
^ If the air bag warning light turns on when the connector is not installed in the module, turn off the ignition switch and reinstall the connector into the module.
^ If the air bag warning light does not turn on, turn off the ignition switch and replace the spacer (F2AZ-14A468-B). Repeat Steps # 4 - # 6 with the new spacer.
7. After the repair is completed and the gray connector is engaged, turn the ignition switch back ON. The air bag warning lamp should turn on for about 10 seconds, then go out. Vigorously wiggle the wires to verify that the warning light does not turn on.
^ If the air bag warning light turns on, check to see that rework to the spacer was completed properly.
^ If the air bag warning light does not turn on, the repair is complete.
