FORD: 1991 PROBE

ISSUE: A Discharged condition of the battery may be caused by the hood light staying on all the time. This can be caused by the binding or misposition of the hood release handle or cable attachment at the instrument panel. The binding restricts the cable from fully retracting into its housing, keeping the hood latch "micro switch" in the "on" position with the hood fully closed.

ACTION: Correct alignment of the handle or cable must be maintained to assure proper operation of the hood lamp. This can be done by installing a flat washer. Refer to the following service procedure for details.

Figure 1:

REPAIR PROCEDURE:

1. Obtain a thin flat washer that can be purchased locally. The washer must be a 1" diameter washer with a 1/2" center diameter. Cut a 3/4" slot into the washer. Refer to figure 1.

2. Remove the lower trim panel to gain access the hood cable attachment. Refer to the 1991 Probe Car Shop Manual for service details.

3. Remove the handle and cable from the instument panel slot. Use a 17 mm open end wrench to remove the retaining nut.

4. Slide the washer onto the cable as shown in figure 1.

NOTE: THE WASHER SLOT OPENING MUST FACE DOWN.

5. Slide the handle and cable assembly into the instrument panel slot and tighten the retaining nut against the flat washer as shown in figure 1.

6. Open and close the hood several times to confirm that the hood cable, latch and light funtion properly.
