Removal and Installation



1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. On non-turbo models, disconnect distributor vacuum hoses, noting location of each hose for proper installation. Disconnect distributor electrical connector from coil, noting wire location for proper installation.

3. On turbo models, disconnect distributor electrical connector near distributor.
4. On all models,remove distributor cap and position aside.
5. Position No. 1 piston at TDC on the compression stroke.
6. Mark position of distributor in engine and position of rotor on distributor housing for installation reference.
7. Remove distributor hold-down bolts, then lift distributor out of engine. Do not crank engine after distributor has been removed.
8. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Ensure No. 1 piston is at TDC on the compression stroke.
b. Install new O-ring onto distributor shaft and lubricate O-ring with engine oil.
c. Ensure distributor drive dog is engaged into camshaft slot when installing distributor to engine.
d. Set ignition timing to specifications. On models with turbocharged engines, set timing to 8-10 degrees with test connector grounded. On models with non-turbocharged engines, set timing to 5-7 degrees with vacuum hoses disconnected and plugged.
