Crankshaft Position Sensor: Description and Operation

The Crankshaft Position Sensor (CPS) provides crankshaft rotation speed input to the Electronic Control Assembly (ECA). The distributor uses a 24 tooth sensor rotor mounted on the distributor shaft. As the sensor passes a fixed magnetic pickup, it generates a signal indicating crankshaft rotation. The ECA uses this signal to modify air/fuel ratio, idle speed, injector timing, ignition timing, fuel pressure, purge flow, EGR flow, and boost pressure.
