Cylinder Head Assembly: Service and Repair

Fig. 5 Cylinder Head Bolt Tightening Sequence:





1. Relieve fuel system pressure refer to MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES/FUEL PRESSURE RELIEF.
2. Disconnect battery ground cable, then drain cooling system.
3. Remove upper radiator hose and the water bypass hose.
4. Remove accessory drive belts.
5. Remove righthand inner fender panel.
6. Remove crankshaft pulley attaching bolts, pulley, then baffle plate.
7. Remove two nuts, dowels from righthand engine mount, then the engine mount from vehicle.
8. Remove seven timing belt cover attaching bolts, then the cover.
9. Remove timing belt tensioner, spring, then attaching bolt.
10. Mark direction of rotation on timing belt. Direction of rotation must be marked to assure that belt is installed in original direction of rotation. Remove timing belt.
11. Remove rocker arm cover, then rocker shaft assembly.
12. Remove intake, then exhaust manifolds as outlined elsewhere in this section.
13. Remove spark plug wires, spark plugs, then the distributor.
14. Remove front and rear engine lifting eyes, then the engine ground wire.
15. Disconnect three electrical connectors from thermostat housing.
16. Remove cylinder head attaching bolts, cylinder head and the gasket.
17. Reverse procedure to install. Torque cylinder head bolts in sequence shown, Fig. 5. 29-32 ft. lbs., then 59-64 ft. lbs. When installing timing belt, align mark on crankshaft sprocket with mark on oil pump housing and align mark on camshaft sprocket with mark on cylinder head.
