Intercooler: Description and Operation
Intercooler:
The intercooler is used to reduce the temperature of the air leaving the turbocharger before entering the intake plenum. The air flowing through the intercooler is cooled by fresh air. If the air compressed by the turbocharger is sent directly into the combustion chamber, the filling efficiency is reduced by the high intake air temperature. The intercooler, by cooling this high temperature air, substantially increases filling efficiency and engine output, and also suppresses the occurance of "knocking" by reducing combustion gas temperature.
