Ignition Timing: Adjustments
IGNITION TIMING
Check and adjust the ignition timing using the following procedures:
1. Place the transaxle to Park or Neutral, then make sure that the A/C and heater fan is in the OFF position.
2. Connect a timing light to the number 1 spark plug.
3. Connect a tachometer.
4. Start the engine and allow it to warm up to normal operating temperature.
Self Test Input Connector:
5. Ground the black 1-pin STI self test connector located near the brake master cylinder.
6. Check the idle speed and adjust, if necessary.
7. Check the base ignition timing. The white ignition timing mark on the crankshaft pulley should align with the white pointer on the timing belt cover.
8. If the white timing mark and the white pointer do not line up, perform the following steps.
9. Loosen the distributor mounting bolts.
Distributor Mounting Bolt Location:
10. Rotate the distributor until the timing marks are properly aligned.
11. Tighten the distributor mounting bolts. Refer to SPECIFICATIONS.
12. Check the timing light to make sure it did not change when the bolts were tightened.
13. Remove the jumper connecting the STI connector to ground.
14. Increase the engine rpm and check the timing marks to be sure that the ignition timing changes.
15. Remove the timing light and tachometer.
