FORD: 1988-91 FESTIVA

ISSUE: No start, hard start or poor engine performance may be caused by water entering through the timing belt cover and freezing the timing belt. This causes the timing belt to jump sprocket teeth resulting in improper spark and cam timing.

ACTION: Install a new timing belt, new design lower timing belt cover gasket, and a new oil pan. Apply silicone gasket and sealant on the oil and water pumps to prevent water from entering into the timing belt area. Refer to the following service procedure for details.

Figure 1:

1. Check the camshaft timing.

a. 1988 - 1989 Carbureted Festiva: Set the crankshaft to TDC by aligning the "T" mark on the lower timing belt cover with the notch on the crankshaft pulley, Refer to Figure 1.

Figure 2:

b. 1989 - 1991 EFI Festiva: Set the crankshaft to TDC timing mark (yellow) on the crankshaft pulley with the white pointer on the lower timing belt cover. Refer to Figure 2.

2. Remove the upper timing belt cover.

Figure 3:

3. Check the alignment of the camshaft timing marks, Figure 3. If the camshaft timing marks are not near the index marks on the cylinder head, rotate the crankshaft one complete revolution to TDC and check the alignment of the camshaft timing marks. If the timing marks do not line up, proceed with step 4. If the camshaft timing is correct, refer to the Engine or Emissions Diagnostics Section of the appropriate Car Shop Manual.

4. Remove all accessory drive belts.

5. Remove the water pump pulley.

Figure 4:

6. Remove the right front wheel and inner fender panel, Figure 4.

NOTE: SUPPORT THE FRONT OF THE CAR ON JACK STANDS.

7. Lift the engine with a floor jack to relieve the pressure from the front engine mount.

8. Remove the front engine mount from the engine.

9. Lower the engine to gain access to the crankshaft pulley bolts and screws.

10. Remove the 4 crankshaft pulley bolts and the 2 Phillips screws.

NOTE: IT MAY BE NECESSARY TO USE A HAND IMPACT DRIVER TO REMOVE THE 2 SCREWS.

11. Remove the crankshaft pulley and timing belt guide plates.

12. Remove the lower timing belt cover.

13. Loosen the timing belt tensioner bolt and reposition the tensioner to the left and temporarily tighten the tensioner bolt.

14. Remove the timing belt.

Figure 5:

15. Clean the two locations as shown in Figure 5.

16. Apply silicone sealer or equivalent to the seams between the oil pump and water pump. Work the silicone into the seams from the inside, using your finger, until silicone can be seen coming through the gap to the exterior side of the part.

Figure 3:

17. Align the camshaft and crankshaft sprockets with the marks on the cylinder head and oil pump housing. Refer to Figure 3.

18. Install the timing belt and loosen the timing belt tensioner bolt. The belt tensioner will slide back to the right. Tighten the timing belt tensioner bolt to 14-19 lb.ft. (19-26 N-m).

19. Install the new gasket on the lower timing belt cover.

Figure 6:

20. Install the upper and lower timing belt covers. Torque the attaching bolts to 69-95 lb.in. (8-11 N-m). For the upper timing belt cover torque sequence, refer to Figure 6.

21. Install the timing belt guide plate and crankshaft pulley(s).

22. Install the front engine mount, right inner fender panel and right front wheel. Remove the car from the jack stands.

23. Re-install the water pump pulley.

24. Re-install all of the accessory drive belts.

NOTE: DO NOT START THE CAR UNTIL THE SILICONE SEALER HAS DRIED A MINIMUM OF 1 HOUR.

25. Raise the vehicle and drain the oil from the oil pan.

26. Remove the oil pan.

27. Clean all gasket surfaces and replace the oil pan with the new level oil pan (E9GZ-6675-A).

28. Warm the engine to normal operating temperature.

29. Turn off all electrical accessories.

30. Make sure the idle speed is within specification.

NOTE: REFER TO VECI LABEL FOR SPECIFICATIONS.

31. Connect the Rotunda Inductive Timing Light (059-00005) or equivalent.

a. 1988 - 1989 Carbureted and EFI Festiva:
Disconnect and plug the vacuum advance hoses to the distributor and disconnect the white single pin high altitude connector lead coming from the distributor.

b. 1990 - 1991 EFI Festiva: Initiate self test by grounding the STI connector (single pin connector, yellow/blue wire) located near the wiper motor.

32. Check the timing at the crankshaft pulley.

NOTE: REFER TO THE VECI LABEL FOR TIMING SPECIFICATIONS.

a. 1988 - 1989 Carbureted Festivia: Refer to Figure 1, for the correct timing mark location.

Figure 2:

b. 1989 - 1991 EFI Festiva: Refer to Figure 2, for the correct timing mark location.

33. If the timing is not within specifications, loosen the distributor mounting bolts and rotate the distributor clockwise to advance or counterclockwise to retard timing.

34. Tighten the distributor mounting bolts to 14-18 lb.ft. (19-25 N-m).

35. Check the timing to make sure it did not change when the distributor mounting bolts were tightened.

a. 1988 - 1989 Carbureted and EFI Feativa:
Connect the high altitude wire and vacuum lines to the distributor vacuum advance.

b. 1990 - 1991 EFI Festiva: Disconnect the STI to ground jumper wire.

36. Increase the engine RPM and check the timing marks to be sure the ignition timing changes.
