Fig. 8 Cylinder Head Bolt Tightening Sequence:
1. Relieve fuel system pressure as outlined under MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES/FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE RELIEF.
2. Disconnect battery ground cable, then drain cooling system.
3. Remove air cleaner assembly and outlet tube, then remove intake manifold as described previously.
4. Remove drive belts, then upper timing belt cover.
5. Remove LH idler pulley and bracket assembly.
6. Raise and support vehicle, then remove RH wheel and inner fender splash shield.
7. Remove crankshaft damper pulley, then lower timing belt cover.
8. Align timing marks as shown, Fig. 6.
9. Release tension on timing belt by loosening tensioner attaching nut, then rotate tensioner with a hex head wrench.
10. Lower vehicle until wheels touch and keep supported on hoist.
11. Disconnect crankshaft sensor wiring assembly, then the center cover.
12. Remove timing belt, ensure location of KOA or KOB on timing belt for proper installation, Fig. 7.
13. Remove cylinder head covers.
14. Remove camshaft timing pulleys.
15. Remove upper rear and center timing belt covers.
16. If left side head is being removed, remove coil bracket and dipstick tube. If right side head is being removed, remove coolant outlet hose.
17. Remove exhaust manifold on left cylinder head. On right cylinder head, ensure exhaust manifold is removed with the head.
18. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Lightly oil all bolts and nuts with oil.
b. Using cylinder head bolt tightening sequence shown in Fig. 8. Torque bolts in two steps as follows; first step 37-50 ft. lbs., second step to 62-68 ft. lbs.
