WIPER MOTOR - FRONT - WILL NOT PARK THE BLADES AT THE BOTTOM OF THE WINDSHIELD

FORD: 1990-91 PROBE

ISSUE: The front windshield wiper motor may not park the wiper blades at the bottom of the windshield. This occurs because of a signal failure inside the wiper motor.

ACTION: Check the wiper motor operation and, if necessary, replace it with a new wiper motor assembly. Refer to the following procedure for service details.

1. Cycle the wiper switch through all of its positions, then turn the wiper switch off. (There are two (2) types of wiper switch controls, intermittent (interval) and non-intermittent.) If the wiper motor does not park the blades in the correct position, the wiper motor assembly could be the cause of this concern.

2. Determine the position of the "Winter/Summer" wiper arm park position.

a. If the wire connector is in the "Winter" position, the arms will park about 2" from the bottom of the windshield.

b. Refer to 1991 Probe Shop Manual, Section 01-16A-14, for detailed explanation.

3. Do not replace the wiper motor assembly until the following items are confirmed. On interval wiper systems, the wiper relay was modified on vehicles built after 4/1/91. TSB 90-13-5 provided a revised relay to resolve a condition similar to that described in Step # 1.

^ Confirm that the revised relay is in place. It is identified with a white label and the part number: KA03A.

^ Non-interval wipers use a jumper wire and connector in place of the wiper relay. Confirm that the jumper wire is in place.

^ Refer to the 1991 Probe Shop Manual, Page 01-16A-3, for wiper switch diagnosis.

4. If the wiper relay and wiper switch wiring are OK and the wiper still will not park the blades in their proper position, replace the wiper motor assembly (E92Z-17508-A).

5. Confirm that the new wiper motor functions properly.
