RADIO - POWER ANTENNA - REPAIR PROCEDURE WITHOUT COMPLETE POWER ANTENNA ASSEMBLY REPLACEMENT
FORD: 1989-91 PROBE
ISSUE: A repair procedure has been developed so the power antenna mast can be repaired without replacing the complete power antenna assembly. If the antenna mast is damaged or broken, radio reception is usually adversely affected and the motor may not fully extend or retract the antenna.
ACTION: If service is required, use the following procedure to install a new service mast assembly.
Some concerns such as failure to fully retract may be caused by dirt, mud or salt accumulating on the mast sections. This can usually be resolved by cleaning the mast sections with alcohol. Do not lubricate the antenna mast.
Figure 1:
POWER ANTENNA REPAIR PROCEDURE
1. Unscrew and remove the antenna bezel, Figure 1.
2. Remove the bezel, "O" ring, mounting insulator and pad.
3. Turn the ignition key to the "ACCY" position and turn on the radio. This should extend the antenna mast.
Figure 2:
4. Firmly pull the antenna mast out of the antenna body, Figure 2.
NOTE: OBSERVE THE PLASTIC CABLE END FOR A SLIGHT TAPER. IF THE CABLE APPEARS BROKEN, A SECTION OF THE PLASTIC CABLE COULD BE INSIDE THE MOTOR ASSEMBLY. REFER TO STEP # 9 FOR ANTENNA MOTOR DISASSEMBLY.
5. Obtain a new service mast assembly (E92Z-18A886-B). Position the plastic cable so the "teeth" are facing the front of the vehicle.
6. Manually extend the antenna mast.
a. Insert the cable into the antenna tube until resistance is felt.
b. Turn the cable slightly left and right to fully engage the cable into the motor gear.
7. Check the antenna retraction.
a. Have someone turn the radio OFF.
b. Apply light pressure to the mast.
c. When the motor starts retracting, it will "wind" the cable into the motor assembly and retract the antenna mast sections.
8. Install the parts removed during Steps # 1 and # 2. Cycle the antenna several times to confirm proper extension and retraction of the mast.
9. If the original cable end was broken as noted in Step # 4, remove the power antenna motor assembly. Refer to the 1991 Probe Shop Manual, Pages 15-02-5 and 15-02-6 for removal procedure.
Figure 3:
10. Remove the broken piece of plastic cable end, Figure 3.
a. Lay the antenna motor on a flat surface with the black cover facing up.
b. Remove the retainer nut, cover, "O" ring, drive mechanism and white cover plate.
c. Locate and remove the broken piece of plastic cable end.
d. Reinstall the parts and install the motor assembly.
