Component Tests and General Diagnostics

^ With engine running at idle, move all primary wires, connectors and battery cables by pushing, pulling and twisting by hand. If vehicle stalls, make necessary repairs to wire or connector.

^ With engine off, disconnect secondary wire from ignition coil Inspect the coil, distributor cap, rotor and ignition wires for cracks or carbon tracking. Replace components as needed. Check vehicle's maintenance schedule to ensure spark plugs and wires have been properly maintained.

^ A damaged or torn Timing Belt can cause symptoms that appear to be ignition timing related.

^ Make sure engine idle speed is within specifications. Refer to SPECIFICATIONS.

Tach Connection.:

^ It is important to get a good, solid connection from the tachometer connection during testing. Note location of proper terminal and use an alligator clip, without removing the coil connector. This is accomplished by inserting the clip into the back of the connector, onto the dark green/yellow dotted wire.

CAUTION: Do not allow this clip to ground to a metal surface. It may permanently damage the coil.

^ START TESTING with TEST 1 - CHECKING FIRING ORDER this will indicate proper testing sequence. The following is a description of the testing procedures.

TEST 11 - MAIN (POWER) RELAY CHECK
TEST 12 - CHECK VACUUM SUPPLY (NON-TURBO)
TEST 13 - TIMING INSPECTION (NON-TURBO)
TEST 14 - IDLE SPEED CHECK
TEST 15 - CENTRIFUGAL ADVANCE CHECK (NON-TURBO)
TEST 16 - VACUUM DIAPHRAGM CHECK (NON-TURBO)
