Throttle Position Sensor: Description and Operation

The throttle position sensor detects throttle plate opening angle. It supplies the electronic control assembly with an input indicating throttle position. On 2.2L/4-133 and 1.8L/4-80.8 automatic transmission models, the throttle position sensor consists of a potentiometer which is capable of sensing a range of throttle plate angle between fully closed and wide open throttle. On models with 1.3L/4-80.8 and 1.8L/4-80.0 manual transmission models, the throttle position sensor consists of two switches sensing only closed or wide open throttle positions. These switches are referred to as the idle switch and wide open throttle switch. The throttle position sensor is mounted on throttle body.
