Malfunction Indicator Lamp: Testing and Inspection


Then malfunction indicator light or check engine light is intended to alert the driver of certain malfunctions in the engine control system. The manual shift light (4EAT only) indicates when the transmission is in manual shift mode. On 2.2L/4-133 turbocharged models, it alerts the drivers of certain 4EAT electronic control malfunctions. The manual shift light is not equipped on 1.8L/4-109 and 1.3L/4-80.8 models.
If such a fault occurs, the processor will substitute a value or values and continue operating. This process is Limited Operating Strategy (LOS). In some cases this action may result in a slight change in driveability.

Check Engine & Manual Light Operations

The check engine will remain on while the key in the Run position, and go off once the vehicle has started. The manual shift light will remain on while in the manual shift mode and off in all other modes. If the check engine light should remain on after the vehicle has started, run Key-On/Engine Off self-test to completion. If the light continues to remain On, proceed to Pinpoint test PGC. If the check engine light never comes On, proceed to Pinpoint test.
If the light comes on for a period then goes off, and a service code is present, the fault is intermittent. If the manual shift light flashes during driving, run Key-On Engine Off self-test to completion. If the light never comes on, proceed to Pinpoint test. When EEC is in self-test, then check engine light will also flash service codes. When in the 4EAT self-test (2.2L/4-133 turbo only), the manual shift light will also flash service codes.
