Timing Belt: Service and Repair
Fig. 7 Aligning Valve Timing Marks:
1. Remove timing belt covers as previously described.
2. Remove timing belt tensioner spring, retaining bolt, then the tensioner.
3. Mark direction of rotation on belt, then remove timing belt from engine.
4. Align camshaft sprocket timing mark with mark on cylinder head and crankshaft sprocket timing mark with mark on oil pump housing, Fig. 7.
5. Install timing belt. If reusing old belt, ensure belt is installed with rotation mark in same direction as noted in step 3.
6. Place timing belt tensioner and spring in position, then temporarily secure tensioner with spring fully extended.
7. With timing belt securely positioned against idler pulley side, loosen tensioner bolt and allow tensioner to retract.
8. Turn crankshaft two revolutions in normal direction of rotation, then ensure timing marks are still aligned as outlined in step 4.
9. Tighten tensioner retaining bolt to specifications, then apply 22 lbs. of pressure to belt. Measure belt deflection between idler pulley and camshaft sprocket. Belt deflection should be .30-.33 inch.
10. If belt deflection is not as specified, repeat steps 6 through 9. If deflection is still not as specified, replace tensioner.
11. Reinstall timing belt covers.
