EGR Valve: Description and Operation

On 2.2L/4-133 turbocharged models, an electronic (EGR) valve where EGR flow is controlled according to ECA demands by means of an EGR valve position sensor attached to the valve. The EGR valve is operated by a vacuum signal from the EGR control solenoid valve. On 2.2L/4-133 non-turbocharged models, it incorporates a modified EGR valve and a remote back-pressure transducer where EGR vacuum applied to the EGR valve is modulated by sensing exhaust back-pressure and bleeding off some vacuum when the back-pressure is low. This provides EGR flow proportional to engine load. Vacuum supplied to the EGR transducer is controlled by an EGR control solenoid valve.
