Hall Effect Sensor: Service and Repair
Removal
1. Remove distributor from engine. Remove drive coupling spring using a small screwdriver or ice pick. Take care not to damage drive coupling or spring.
2. Using compressed air, blow dirt and oil from drive end of distributor. Put a small paint dot on drive coupling and shaft to note location for reassembly, then line up drive pin with slot in base. Install distributor in a suitable holding fixture.
3. With an assistant holding distributor steady on a suitable support tool, use a 5/32 inch diameter drift and hammer to drive pin out of shaft.
4. Remove distributor and drive coupling from fixture and set aside.
5. Prior to removing shaft from base, check for burrs on end of shaft around drive pin hole. If burrs are present, file and polish shaft with emery paper, and wipe clean before removing shaft from base to prevent damage to lip seal and bushing in base.
6. Remove shaft by gently pulling up on shaft plate, then remove two screws attaching module to base. Remove module assembly. Wipe grease from base and module, keeping surfaces free of dirt.
7. Remove octane rod. Remove two screws retaining stator connector in bowl of distributor.
8. Remove stator assembly from top of bowl by gently lifting up.
9. Inspect bushing for wear or signs of excess heat, shaft oil seal and base O-ring for tears or cuts, spring retainer for kinks or breaks and casting for cracks and wear. Replace complete distributor assembly if any damage is discovered.
Installation
1. Install stator over bushing and press down to seat.
2. Install stator connector in position. Tab should fit in notch on base and fastening eyelets should be aligned with their screw holes. Position wires away from moving parts.
3. Install two stator screws and Torque to 15-35 inch lbs.
4. Install octane rod. Install TFI module.
5. Apply a light coat of motor oil to distributor shaft below armature. Do not over lubricate. Install shaft assembly through base bushing, then place drive coupling over shaft and line up paint dots. Start pin into drive coupling and shaft.
6. With assistant holding distributor steady on suitable support tool, drive pin into shaft until end of pin is flush with step in drive coupling. Check for free movement of drive coupling on pin, and that pin does not extend beyond step in coupling in either direction.
7. Remove distributor from fixture and check for free rotation, then install drive coupling spring in groove on drive coupling. Install distributor.
