Convertible Top Pad - Ripping/Tearing

CONVERTIBLE TOP - PAD TORN BY LINKAGE MECHANISM
FORD: 1989 MUSTANG
ISSUE: A tear in the convertible top pad may be caused by the linkage mechanism. This is caused by rough metal edges on the center side rail casting rubbing on the convertible top pad.
ACTION: Remove any rough metal edges and install shims on the convertible top linkage mechanism. Refer to the following procedure for service details.

1. Locate the center siderail causing the tear in the padding, Figure 1.

2. Remove the rough metal at the rear of the center siderail until the surface is smooth, Figure 2.

3. Locate the spring on the third bow attached at the siderail, Figure 3.
4. Remove the spring by removing the pivot pin held by the clevis pin, Figure 3. Throw away the spring on both sides.

5. Add shims to the third bow bracket as shown in Figure 4.
6. Remove 1/16" (1.588 mm) of material from the end of the bushings as shown in Figure 4.
7. Before re-inserting the clevis pin in the pivot pin, add one (1) or two (2) washers (44722-S8), Figure 4. These are used as shims to prevent lateral movement of the pivot pin.
8. Re-install the pivot pin through the third bow bracket and center siderail, Figure 4.
NOTE: DEPENDING ON THE DEALER'S CONVERTIBLE,TOP REPAIR CAPABILITY, IN SOME CASES, IT MAY BE NECESSARY TO HAVE AN "OUTSIDE SHOP" REPAIR OR REPLACE THE TORN TOP PAD.
