Distributor: Service and Repair

Distributor Assembly:





Removal

1. Disconnect the battery negative cable.

2. Remove the distributor cap and disconnect the vacuum hoses.

3. Disconnect the white altitude connector from the distributor wiring harness.

4. Remove the coil positive nut and disconnect the distributor harness connector and suppression capacitor wire. Pull the distributor connector off the coil ground terminal tab. Open the harness routing clip and free the distributor primary circuit wires.

5. Before loosening the distributor mounting bolts, mark a timing reference mark on the distributor base flange and cylinder head to facilitate installation without changing the timing.

6. Remove two mounting bolts from the base flange and pull out the distributor assembly.

Installation

1. Inspect the distributor base O-ring and replace it if worn or damaged. Lubricate the O-ring with engine oil.

2. Insert the distributor into the cylinder head mounting bore, turning the rotor as necessary until the offset drive tang engages with the camshaft slot.

3. Align the timing reference marks made before removal. Install two mounting bolts through the base flange and tighten the distributor against the head.

4. Position the distributor-to-coil primary harness, and the suppression capacitor lead, in the harness routing clip and close the clip. Connect the harness to the coil primary terminals, and the suppression capacitor and battery leads to the positive terminal. Connect the white altitude connector to the distributor wiring harness.

5. Install the distributor cap and connect the vacuum lines.

6. Connect the battery negative cable.
