AXLE - REAR - UNSATISFACTORY TOP SPEED PERFORMANCE IN SPECIAL SERVICE VEHICLES (POLICE)
Article No. 88-21-4
FORD: 1988 MUSTANG
ISSUE: Unsatisfactory top speed performance of 1988 Mustang special service vehicles (police) may be caused by the rear axle ratio. The standard 3.08:1 rear axle ratio offered in 1987 was replaced late in the model year with either an optional 2.73:1 or 3.27:1 axle ratio. The 3.27:1 rear axle ratio used in police vehicles equipped with AOD transmissions may limit top speed performance to an unsatisfactory level for their intended use.
ACTION: Install a new ring and pinion, pinion bearings and speedometer driven gear to convert the rear axle ratio to 2.73:1. This will improve top speed performance. Refer to the 1988 Car Shop Manual, Volume D, Section 15-06 for removal and installation instructions.
NOTE: THE SPEEDOMETER DRIVEN GEAR MUST ALSO BE REPLACED ALONG WITH THE RING AND PINION TO MAKE SURE THE SPEEDOMETER INDICATES ACCURATELY.
