Article NO. 90-9-1

FORD: 1987-89 MUSTANG

ISSUE: Some Mustang LX and GT models equipped with "Goodyear Eagle GT" 235/60R15 tires may show evidence of tire rub marks on the front fender lower extensions.

ACTION: Use the following service procedure to provide increased clearance for the front tires.

^ Adjust the front fenders on both the LX and GT models.

^ Modify the lower front extensions on the GT units only.

NOTE: WHEN PERFORMING STEPS 1 THROUGH 4, MAKE SURE THAT THE MARGINS BETWEEN THE HOOD, FENDER AND DOOR ARE MAINTAINED.

Figure 1:

1. Loosen the three screws holding the top of the fender to the apron and sidemember assembly, Figure 1.

Figure 2:

2. Loosen the screw holding the fender brace to the radiator support. This is best done with the car on a hoist, Figure 2.

3. Pull the lower front of the fender outward as far as possible. Tighten the screw holding the fender to the radiator support to 6-11 lb.ft. (8-15 N-m).

4. Tighten the three screws attaching the top of the fender to 6-11 lb.ft. (8-15 N-m).

Figure 3:

Continue with Steps 5 through 12 for GT models.

5. Remove the three screws holding the lower front extension to the fender flange, Figure 3. Do not remove the extension.

6. Pull the extension away from the fender. Inspect the extension for excess material at the lower screw attachment.

Figure 4:

7. If required, remove excess material as shown in Figure 4.

8. Position the extension on the fender. Install the three attaching screws and tighten securely.

Figure 5:

Figure 7:

9. Cut out the full size template, Figure 7, and lay it on the bottom of the fender extension, Figure 5.

10. Mark and drill holes in the extension as shown on the template.

Figure 6:

11. Position the added brace on the inside of the extension, Figure 6. Install screw "A" first through the extension into the brace.

12. Push forward on the extension to line up holes in the extension and brace, Figure 6. Install Screw "B".

NOTE: ADDING THIS BRACE WILL CAUSE A SLIGHT OUTWARD BOW ON THE BOTTOM OF THE EXTENSION THAT MAY BE NOTICEABLE.

13. Perform this procedure on the opposite side.
