SUBJECT:
Emissions Recall 91E12 - Emissions Control System Modifications on Certain 1988 and 1989-Model 1.9L Engine Equipped California Escorts

AFFECTED VEHICLES:
1988 and 1989-Model California Escorts equipped with manual transmissions and 1.9L engines having calibration codes 8-07E-R00 or 8-07E-R10.

REASONS FOR RECALL:
The California Air Resources Board (CARB) and Ford have conducted in-use tests on some of the affected cars and have determined that they may be releasing exhaust emissions which exceed California standards.

SERVICE ACTION:
Cars returned for service will have the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) systems modified and engine initial ignition timing reset at no-charge, Engine throttle bodies will be cleaned and new Vehicle Emissions Control Information (VECI) decals will be attached in addition to the above service.
